Ian Becker adjusts to pack life after his co-worker, Kate Hale, makes a generous offer. He’s determined to prevent negative consequences for her, except in his line of work that might be an impossible promise.
This is a 40,000 word novella in The Outlier Prophecies world. This story can be read out of order from the main series. Big Bad Becker takes place between the end of book one, Romancing the Null, and before the start of book two, Conditional Probability of Attraction. Big Bad Becker is NOT a retelling of Romancing the Null through Becker's POV. It has its own plot, new scenes, and serves as an extra for readers who want to know what happened between the two books.

Big Bad Becker An Outlier Prophecies Short Novel The Outlier Prophecies Book 7 edition by Tina Gower Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
Just finished reading the fourth book in the Outlier series and saw this short piece focusing on Becker. It provides some background on his issues and what happened to him between the first and second books. Recommend reading it because it sets the scene for the second book as well as explains who he and gives us his background history. Becker is all wound up in the second book but we do not really know why, and mystery is solved here. I enjoyed the book, well written with good character developmet, and really not that short for a short story. Having finished the fourth book and waiting for next one, this was a good reprieve.
If you enjoyed Romancing the Null and Conditional Probability of Attraction then you'll enjoy seeing how things are from Becker's POV. I do suggest reading this after book one, otherwise if you read it later then it seems more like a flashback. An 'oh yeah, I remember that' will more than likely cross your mind like it did mine.
You don't really learn any more about the storyline, but you do find out why Becker acts the way he does sometimes and why he attempts to put distance between him and Kate...even though that part never seems to work out as he plans.
Big Bad Becker is a nice addition to the series and it answers a lot of questions about him. Now I'm ready for book five, Shifter Variance.
Ever since this novella was announced, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. I was dying for a look into The Outlier Prophecies from Ian Becker’s point of view, because I wanted to understand him better as a character. I wanted to know more about his day-to-day life and more into his past, and Big Bad Becker gave me exactly what I was looking for.
Big Bad Becker takes place between books 1 and 2 of The Outlier Prophecies and fills in small amounts of information to readers. Would I recommend reading it right after finishing book one? Probably. It doesn’t hurt to read them in the order they were written, but the events of Big Bad Becker makes some more of his behavior in latter books more understandable when you see where he’s coming from. But at the same time, waiting to read it allows you to go through the exact same “Oh my God, just shut up and kiss each other!” feelings that I went through in the later books, whereas if you read the novella in after book one, you might find yourself more understanding of Becker being standoffish when it comes to having a relationship with Kate.
Getting a better glimpse into Becker’s world was amazing. I enjoyed getting to see him interact with his dads, even if it was just through phone calls, and learning more about what it was like for Becker growing up as an adopted werewolf. His dads were awesome, I’d put them in the same category as Lipski and maybe even Ali because they tend to call it like they see it as well. I also gained more appreciation for the relationship between Lipski and Becker, seeing how much they care for each other and how well they work together as police officers. The contrast of Becker working with another officer and how didn’t work as well was excellent. Stubborn Becker even admitted to himself that it didn't work! But as always, I loved how much Lipski just called Becker out left and right.
And and and! We get to see Jack again! Becker’s visit with Jack was great. No spoilers, but Jack is awesome.
My only small complaint would be that reading Big Bad Becker in third person was a little strange to me when all the rest of the books (even though they were from Kate’s POV) have been in first person. It’s a minor consistency thing that was strange to me at first, but I got used to it once I got into the story. (So like by page 2…)
Overall, this novella was a brilliant idea because it allows readers to understand Becker a little better. Awesome job!
4.5 stars, actually.
It's pretty difficult for me to award more than 4 starts to a Novella that basically acts as an interim story between two actual books in the series. A Novella that doesn't resolve anything, a novella that basically just stops at the end.....and yet I'm giving this one 4.5?
I've pretty much only given interim short stories/novellas by like Ilona Andrews and Patricia Briggs that high a score before.
I don't know, maybe I'm in a good mood? Maybe it's because this Novella picks up at the end of the first Outlier Prophecy Novel where main character Actuary Kate and her main foil, policeman Ian Becker have solved a case that simultaneously uncovered a deeper darker possibility and also entered into an untraditional relationship.
I don't really recommend reading this Novella as an intro to the series, there's too much backstory making Becker and Kate's relationship issues delicious. But I totally suggest reading it if you've at least read the first in the series.
While the first book is mostly Kate's POV, this is mostly Becker's POV and there's alot of longing from afar, and dealing with the issues of Becker's attachments to Kate getting all mixed up with his werewolf Pack longings, etc. There's a lot of sleeping together...but mostly when Kate is actually sleeping or sleepy. Fear not, shippers, this Novella doesn't introduce anything too drastic before you get to book two.
And while the criminal investigation isn't that titillating, the question of how Becker will control himself, if Kate's cousin witchy Ali or Becker's partner Hank will upset their carefully balanced tightrope act, etc. etc. So shippers will love this, people more focused on plot maybe not so much. And as I mentioned, it stops abruptly, but I've already got the second book so I'm ready to plunge on ahead.
We finally get to learn more about Beckers dads and his relationship with Lipski! And even better we get to know whats going on in his head and how hard he really struggles every day. I am so incredibly happy to see the story unfold from his perspective. His dads tho, *love them* they're totally adorbs.
